CHICAGO Chicago has been the muse for numerous musicians, comedians, and writers for decades. Whether it is being referred to as the Second City, Windy City, or as crooner Frank Sinatra would say, "My kinda town", metropolitan area is rich in history, and a thriving location which nearly three million people call home. Population figures also dictate the ethnic make up of the residents are 62.% white, 19.7% black, nearly 10% Asian, and almost 6% Hispanic. Shopping experiences galore await residents, and visitors in the downtown area. The Loop Retail district brings high end shops and plazas on the area known as the "Magnificent Mile", with a host of smaller shopping malls located in the more suburban addresses just north of the busier epicenter. Classic favorite, and often shown in magazine and film, is the former Marshall Fields building, now known as Macy's storefront Christmas displays. Also located on the "Magnificent Mile" is Rush Street, the night club and entertainment center of the city. The Wrigley Building, Tribune and old Water Tower District, all of which are named on the National Historic Register can be found in the Loop, and Downtown area. The prestigious area known as the Gold Coast neighborhood is also a part of Chicago downtown neighborhood. Lake Shore Drive offers some of the most high end homes and apartments in the city. Neighborhoods of Old Town, Goose Island, River West, River East, Streeterville, Washington Square, and Connors Park are also prime spots located within, or the boundaries of the Gold Coast area. Old Town is widely known as the most affluent section of the city, and features some of the rare original Victorian buildings which survived the Chicago fire. The widely renowned, and famous Second City comedy troupe is also located in this area. Goose Island is the sole island on the Chicago River, and is home to the Wrigley Global Innovation Center. The River sections boast the second largest art gallery district in the nation. The River North Gallery District, which features what is considered the largest collection of art galleries, second only to Manhattan. Galleries are located mainly along the streets of Huron, Superior, Wells, and Orleans. Chicago's Streeterville community is another well to do section of the downtown area, with many tall professional and apartment buildings, shopping, fine dining, and hotels. The Northwestern University School of Medicine, School of Law, and School of Continuing Studies are all located in Streeterville. Top Chicago tourist attraction, the Navy Pier also call this section of the city home. The pier was used as a hb for the bustling cargo and freighter businesses, with a peak of service hitting during World War II, and was used for wartime purposes. The city owned pier, was officially renamed from the city pier, to the Navy Pier at this time, and eventually became an education site as a part of the University of Illinois. Public Events, and world wide exhibitions including dance, circus performances, dining, art, and shopping revived the pier, which remains as a premier entertainment venue, and tourist attraction today. Dining experiences abound for Chicago dwellers. Ed Debevic's is a small chain, with a big following. It was built as a themed eatery in the early 1960's, and even offers a gift shop for unusual keepsakes from the dining visit. "Eat and Get Out" is the tongue and cheek motto of the old fashioned diner, where the wait staff is known to jump on the counter and dance from time to time. Typical classic diner fare is offered at moderate prices, with Ed's Windy City Chili, and a huge variety of all beef hotdogs with specialty topping sauces from which to choose. The Hungry Hobo is also a small chain, and local favorite. Quirky décor, and a pride in customer service has made the restaurant a success with Chicago residents. Gage park is one of the most popular areas with working class families in the city, and has a high level of Irish Catholic residents. The western end of the south side of town has a higher crime rate than other potions of this neighborhood, and a larger Hispanic population. African Americans have had a growing presence in the south side of Chicago in recent years, especially near the inland of the Lake area. This section of the city boasts a culturally and historically presence, but is noted as the area in the most need of revitalization. Hyde Park is described as the most affluent section of the south side. The University of Chicago, and lush green spaces promote a higher quality of life, and a low crime area. Kenwood is known for large mansions, and a diverse section of residents, which also include university students, and young professionals. The east end of the South side is primarily African-American and has been the scene of economic struggles, and social hardship. While struggling with quality of life issues, the area remains known as a culturally rich community, with attractive historic buildings, and the will to grow in the right direction for change, and return the area to what was once considered a wonderful place to live, and raise a family. The Jackson Park Highland district, along with areas such as Chatham, Burnside, and Calumet Heights a middle-class, almost exclusively African-American has remained a low crime, and welcoming community very similar to the nearly all white more affluent north side area of Chicago. The South - West side has a nearly 10,000 population and is also near the Illinois Institute of Technology and U.S. Cellular Field, where the White Sox's play. This section runs along Lake Michigan and is known for the beauty of the shoreline. While not currently as crowded as the Loop area, it is growing rapidly primarily due to the sections nearness to the downtown area, and all of the attraction and action which occur there. This section of the south side is expected to see the largest population growth in the city's history. Rental and sales prices are currently more competitive than in the already established and more expensive north side of the city. Amid all of the construction and enhancement projects underway, some of the oldest building in Chicago are found in the south side: the Widow Clarke House, which remains known as one of the most elite neighborhoods in Chicago., Chicago Bee Newspaper Building, now a library and a prime attraction for art deco fans.
