About 'grad school for social work'|... at work and stuff like that...poor in Europe, the social system is... in the US for the forseeable future...existence EMILY: In art school I pretty much... about grad school but wasn't...

So               you               want               to               go               to               grad               school?

Interested               in               grad               school               in               area               such               as               psychology,               sociology,               criminology,               family               studies,               or               gerontology?

Read               on.

First               of               all,               be               aware               that               all               grad               programs               are               different.

Your               grad               school               may               be               different               from               what               I               discuss               here,               particularly               if               it's               an               exclusively               on-line               program.

Most               grad               programs               do,               however,               share               some               similarities.
Many               people               want               to               know               how               grad               school               differs               from               their               undergraduate               experience.

I               never               tell               them               that               graduate               school               is               more               difficult---because               this               is               generally               not               what               students               say.

Keep               in               mind               that               a               typical               grad               school               load               is               7               to               9               hours               (compared               to               about               15               for               undergrads).

You               will               spend               less               time               in               class               as               a               grad               student               than               you               did               as               an               undergrad.

However,               you               are               expected               to               spend               more               time               outside               of               class               for               each               credit               hour               than               you               did               as               an               undergrad.

As               a               grad               student,               I               was               surprised               at               how               much               "free               time"               I               had.

It               was               up               to               me               to               manage               that               time,               which               wasn't               really               "free"               after               all,               to               be               successful               in               my               classes.
Furthermore,               you               are               really               expected               to               do               your               reading               BEFORE               you               come               to               class.

I               teach               undergrad               classes,               and               we               spend               a               lot               of               time               in               class               reviewing               readings               and               making               sure               they               are               understood.

In               grad               school,               time               in               class               is               not               used               on               reviewing               readings---it's               more               about               discussing               readings               and               expanding               on               them.

If               you               come               to               class               as               a               grad               student               and               have               not               done               your               readings,               it's               usually               apparent.
In               my               undergrad               classes,               which               are               generally               larger,               I               have               a               portion               of               the               students               who               are               active               and               insightful               class               participants.

Many               are               just               along               for               the               ride.

In               a               graduate               level               class,               everyone               is               expected               to               be               an               active               and               insightful               class               participants.

And,               because               the               classes               are               smaller,               it's               noticeable               if               you're               a               weak               link.

As               an               undergrad,               it's               usually               easy               to               hide               if               you're               not               prepared               for               class.

It's               harder               to               hide               as               a               grad               student.

Grad               students               are               expected               to               be               leaders.

It's               not               uncommon               for               professors               to               have               grad               students               take               turns               "teaching"               the               class               or               leading               class               discussions.
If               you               are               in               grad               school               in               the               right               area,               your               classes               should               be               enjoyable.

I               am               a               social               scientist               and               completed               a               master's               and               doctorate               in               human               development               and               family               studies.

I               won't               say               grad               school               wasn't               hard               work,               but               it               came               easily               to               me               because               the               classes               were               interesting               and               fun.

Why               were               the               classes               interesting               and               fun?

Because               they               were               in               "my"               area.

I               didn't               have               to               take               chemistry               (which               I               am               no               good               at)               or               philosophy               (which               isn't               my               thing).

All               of               my               classes               were               up               my               alley.

If               you               get               to               grad               school               and               don't               feel               this               way,               you               may               want               to               reconsider               the               field               you               are               pursuing.
I               tell               people               that               self-motivation               is               a               key               to               success               in               graduate               school.

Undergrads               usually               have               a               little               bit               of               hand               holding.

They               are               given               an               assignment               or               project               and               the               professor               follows               up               on               their               progress               each               step               of               the               way.

If               you               are               working               on               a               thesis               or               dissertation,               it's               up               to               you               to               set               a               timeline               and               manage               your               time               efficiently-maybe               by               breaking               the               task               up               into               several               steps.

If               you               aren't               self-motivated,               you               may               struggle               as               a               grad               student.
