About 'uk social work jobs'|Working in the UK & Graduate Job Search
During this recession, many adults considered a change in careers opting to pursue a career in criminal justice. If you are considering a career in criminal justice, and you have an interest in working with the victims of crime, it will be important to become familiar with the Victim's Charter and how it will apply to your work in your new profession even when performing these activities in the United States - an area not associated with the publishing of the Victim's Charter. The Victim's Charter, published originally in 1990, is a UK based program that was designed to promote the interaction of probation officers and the victims, or families of the victims, involved with their client cases. In years prior to the Victim's Charter, probation officers were more likely to interact solely with their client and not take into consideration the fears or anxieties of victims and their families. When considering a career as a probation officer in the United States, you may find that some of the elements of the Victim's Charter can bleed over into your daily work - often requiring that you contact victims of crimes and discuss their concerns with regard to your client. Working with victims and their families can be challenging and is usually a highly sensitive issue. Because some cases are involved in public spectacle, the way in which you interact with a victim, or their family, should be handled in a professional manner and with great care so as to prevent any further inquiry from the public or the media. When feeling offended, many victims reach out to media and victim's rights groups and can create more hardship in the goals you are trying to achieve with your client. In some counties and states, the interaction of a probation officer with the victim or the victim's family can be quite limited and constrained. Understanding that victims of crime do not always understand the intent and goal of the probation officer, there are some states and counties that require the probation officer to elicit the services of a mediary such as a victim's support group advocate. As you consider the criminal justice system as your professional career option, you may want to connect with the advocacy groups and begin to become familiar with the connections and methods by which they interact with those charged with a crime and those who are victims of such. Making a career change can be challenging. If you have an interest in the criminal justice system, opting to change careers and move into probation and adult supervision services may be intriguing. Becoming familiar with international statutes, such as the Victim's Charter, can make you a far better probation officer and well versed in your career serving not only the needs of your client but also maintaining the care and attention needed of the crime victims and families of crime victims.
